Going away? Tips to keep your home safe

If you're away for more than four consecutive days during the heating season, have a competent person enter your house daily to ensure heating is maintained. If you can't make these arrangements, a temperature alarm can be installed and linked to your monitored home security system, as an alternative.

Negligence remains the leading cause of fire. However, simple precautions can prevent a disaster. Ensure that all of your smoke detectors are functioning properly. Avoid overloading electrical circuits, and above all, never leave smokers' materials within reach of children.

Prevent water damage all year long

Periodically check that the dishwasher and washing machine hook-ups are not leaking and replace hoses that show signs of deterioration or cracking.

Spring means spring cleaning! There is nothing like fresh air to freshen up your home. Yet you should be careful not to leave doors and windows open unattended. The same applies for garage doors. Be sure to close them whenever you go out. Do not tempt thieves; they will not turn down this "invitation".
